Iced Sage Tea for Hot Flushes

Sage - Salvia Officinale

Sage has been used for centuries.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) menopausal symptoms like hot flushes are often linked to "Kidney Yin Deficiency," where the body’s cooling, nourishing essence is depleted, leading to excess heat. Busy lives, stress, anxiety and unprocessed grief are understood to deplete Kidney Yin, aggravating heat and dryness in the body. Emotional strain and overwork can also 'burn up' the body's vital fluids and energy, making it harder to cool down, both physically and emotionally. Sage is considered a cooling herb and 'yin-nourishing' herb which directly helps address heat-related symptoms by clearing heat and balancing the body's internal temperature.

What else makes Sage so special for hot flushes?

  • Its active compounds share a certain chemical resemblance to oestrogen, helping to balance oestrogens during the menopausal transition.

  • It has astringent properties which lessen sweating.

  • It supports our thermoregulation processes, which helps prevent sweating and normalise temperature.

  • Its flavonoids and rosmarinic acid have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. These properties which help manage underlying inflammation and oxidative stress that can contribute to hot flushes and other menopausal symptoms.

  • Some studies suggest that sage can inhibit the breakdown of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine, which affects body temperature regulation.

Ingredients

  • Fresh sage leaves from your garden or local supermarket. Use either 4-5 leaves for a pot of tea OR 30 to 40 leaves for a 1 litre jug of tea

  • Boiling hot water to steep

  • Optional

    • Lemon slices and juice

    • Fresh mint leaves

    • Stevia liquid drops to sweeten

Method

  • Pop the sage leaves into a pot on the stove.

  • Bring to boil for 3-5 minutes

  • Then steep the sage (and mint if using) off heat for 5-20 minutes either on the stove or in your teapot. The longer, the stronger and more therapeutic.

  • Strain herbs and allow to cool.

  • Add as much lemon juice and/or stevia as you like.

  • If making a jug store in the fridge.

Enjoy as many cups as you like in the day and a cup no less than 2 hours before bed.

xx
